“It’s ridiculous that at some point, the rich are so rich and the rest of us are just trying to survive.”

Albuquerque is best known for green chillies, the balloon fiesta, Walter White’s Breaking Bad and skateable concrete ditches, called “arroyos”. We learned about the latter from Nicole, a skater “old enough to remember when skateboarding wasn’t cool” who opened Silver Skate shop back in 2003. “I studied business, but I’m a college dropout. I opened this shop while I was going to business school.” Anyone serious about skating should try the city’s 83 miles of arroyos, perfectly suited for longboarders.People come from all over the world to skate Indian school ditch.” Nicole is all about hard-core skateboarding, caps and shoes are not her primary concern. “I have a skate team as well. We have about 13 kids on the team. They get skateboards from us. We buy them some dinners. We go to competitions in New York, L.A., Phoenix… It’s the Silver skate squad.” The sense of community shows a lot in Nicole’s speech. “I’m very much into supporting my locals. Not just here in Albuquerque. I have friends in other communities that I still consider locals. It’s about supporting the little guy and getting away from corporate greed.”
